Shotgun Chokes explained the simple way.
The more constriction a choke provides the tighter the pellets are going to be when fired at a 30 inch circle at 25-40 yards. On the choke packaging it will tell you if the pattern is for 25 or 40 yards.
Here is the list of Chokes from most constriction to less constriction:
Extra full chokes or turkey chokes- A very tight pattern for turkey head shots
Full Choke-70% of the pellets in a 30” circle at 40 yards. Uses- buckshot, trap, waterfowl pass and turkey hunting
Modified Choke- 60% of the pellets in a 30” circle at 40 yards. Uses- all around use choke, small game, pheasant, and upland birds.
Skeet Choke- 50-60% of your pellets in a 30” circle at 25 yards. Uses- close range skeet shooting.
Improved Cylinder Choke- 50% of the pellets in a 30” circle at 40 yards. Uses- close range small game hunting, upland bird hunting, rifled slugs.
Cylinder bore- 0 constriction that gives you 40% of your pellets in a 30” circle at 40 yards. Most Tactical shotguns without a choke are going to have a cylinder bore.
